Insight into 'Underserved Musical Genres’
American contributions to musical arts comprise a vast legacy inclusive of musical styles such as jazz, blues, folk, gospel, bluegrass, rock-and-roll, soul, hip-hop, etc. The musical styles currently being served in the commercial mainstream music entertainment industry (Hip-hop, Pop, Contemporary Rock, Contemporary Country) represent an insignificant fraction of these genres. The bulk of this legacy is represented by ‘classicized’ musical genres, meaning they are primarily of academic interest and have a small community of ardent supporters. To wit: the percentage of jazz recording sales by genre is now around 1%. The Livermore Jazz Society seeks to promote and facilitate funding for Jazz and other musical genres which constitute ~1% or less of the music market.
A music industry survey by BuzzAngleMusic © Statista 2019 shows a genre breakdown:
Hip-Hop/Rap: 21.7%
Pop: 20.1%
Rock: 14%
R&B: 10.6%
Latin: 9.4%
Country: 8.7%
EDM: 3.9%
Religious: 3.2%
Stage & Screen: 2.7%
World: 1.5%
Jazz: 1.1%
Reggae: 1%
Classical: 1%
New Age: 0.5%
Note that the percentage of classical recording sales is on par with that of jazz sales, and that the percentage of total sales for music in the other underserved genres (blues, folk, gospel, bluegrass, etc) is so small as to not even be include in the chart (<0.1%).
We are duty-bound to keep our rich cultural heritage alive. The Livermore Jazz Society is dedicated to that cause, and seeks to provide funding for performances in Livermore, California and the neighboring Tri-Valley region. In many communities the underserved musical genres are not commercially viable and require subsidization in order to expose them to the American public via live performances. Within this subclass of underserved American music, composers are creating original works, and they are being performed by musical ensembles, but most of this is relegated to academia. The Livermore Jazz Society seeks to provide a non-academic alternative for presenting performances of these genres which form our cultural legacy.
